Agnus Castus - Help For Menopause And Menstruation

Growing Characteristics And Uses

The growing characteristics of agnus castus can be best seen in its native Mediterranean where it thrives in the warm climate. Its characteristic uses for women, to regulate menopause and the menstrual cycle, are also well known there.

Agnus castus loves growing in these Mediterranean areas and in soil which is light, well drained and of alkaline to neutral quality. In the UK it is likely to be found growing in the warmer southern parts, though it is not found often. It is not happy growing in the shade. As it will flower late in the UK, the seeds will not develop fully. Happily, the medical characteristics of agnus castus are becoming as well known in the UK as in its native Mediterranean areas.

The common name of this herb is agnus castus; the full Latin name is Vitex agnus castus. It is often called plain 'Vitex'. It is not a cactus (it is sometimes mis-pronounced "Agnus Cactus"), but a member of the Verbena family.

The name 'Agnus Castus' derives from the Greek for 'chaste'. According to Pliny, writing in the first century, Greek women wishing to preserve their chastity placed leaves of this plant on their beds and slept on them. Pliny's contemporary, Dioscorides, claimed that the characteristics of Agnus Castus preserved chastity because it smells so bad that, when strewn on the bed, it was enough to deter amorous advances from men! Agnus Castus was certainly used widely by the ancient herbalists for menopause and hormone balancing. Dioscorides even concurs with its current uses; "it both brings down the milk and expels the menstrua". Although it is not found growing natively in the UK, records indicate that it was in use here by 1500. It is then mentioned in Gerard's herbal in the seventeenth century. Until recent years, though, you would have difficulty finding much written in UK herb books about agnus castus. It is in the rest of Europe that the herb has had the most use over the past century.

Only in the last ten years has agnus castus been growing in popularity in the UK - and, more recently, in America.

USES OF AGNUS CASTUS

Vitex agnus castus is mainly known as a remedy used by women for hormone balance and menopause. Its characteristics are such that it will work very well on its own. I will concentrate on its effects for PMT and menopause.

Agnus castus has a balancing effect on female hormones. Agnus castus' amphoteric or 'normalising' characteristics make it useful in many situations including menopause. And it can often be helpful - some studies indicate improvements for 90% of PMT sufferers, for example.

PMT (PMS) - for PMT vitex agnus castus can improve;

  • Headache
  • Breast tenderness
  • Fatigue
  • Bloating
  • Anxiety and other similar psychological symptoms
  • Irregular cycle
  • Short or long cycle

MENOPAUSE - for menopause vitex agnus castus can improve;

  • Night sweats
  • Hot flushes (flashes)
  • Fatigue
  • Although agnus castus is recommended by several sources for increasing breast milk - as referred to by Dioscorides - I have come across little evidence for this.

DOSAGE
For both PMT (PMS) or menopause:

Raw agnus castus herb (powdered whole berry): 1-2 grammes (2-4 capsules) daily.
Agnus castus fluid Extract: 20-40 drops
Agnus castus tincture: 60-120 drops (about 1-2 teaspoonsful, or 3-6ml)

Or follow the instructions on any proprietary pack of any agnus castus product being used.

Agnus castus is usually taken as a single dose first thing in the morning for both PMT (PMS) and menopause. This is the best time to influence the pituitary gland - which appears to be the main target of the herb.

Results of using agnus castus are often seen within a few weeks. However, if you see no change, don't give up until you have taken it through two periods, if taking it for PMT (PMS); or for at least two months during menopause. If you begin to obtain benefits in either PMT (PMS) or menopause continue using agnus castus for 4-6 months, then reduce the dose by half for a few weeks. If you need help, call a company which offers unlimited free advice.

If the improvements for PMT (PMS) or menopause are maintained, leave off altogether. If the symptoms are growing, restore the previous dosage, and continue for a further 2-3 months. If the symptoms keep returning when you try to wean yourself off the herb, see a qualified practitioner in alternative therapy; the agnus castus may be a useful 'crutch' for you - but you probably need professional help in treating a more fundamental imbalance.

COMBINATIONS
The number of combination products containing agnus castus as one ingredient is growing. It often happens that a combination of herbs will be more effective than a single herb. This is more often for menopause, but can also be for PMT (PMS). Find a product which works for you - either the single herb or a combination of herbs - and then continue with it for a full course of treatment - possibly 4-6 months.

CAUTIONS
Do not take vitex agnus castus during pregnancy; and it would be wise to avoid it when taking any other product or drug which affects the female hormone system - such as HRT or the contraceptive pill.

The characteristics of agnus castus are so benign that reports of negative reactions are few. About one in 50 people may experience mild indigestion, or a mild skin rash. If this happens, stop taking the herb for a few days then slowly re-introduce it.

KEEPING A RECORD OF YOUR HEALTH
As always where your health is concerned - keep a record. Note in a diary how you are feeling when taking agnus castus or an agnus castus combination. This is often very useful when deciding how beneficial a treatment has been. It can also be helpful information for a practitioner, should you consult one.

Agnus castus has extremely valuable characteristics for women, and is one of the most popular and useful herbs in this category. Its use outside its native Mediterranean is growing, and deservedly so. For both PMT (PMS) and menopause its benefits are well proven through long use. It is well worth trying for both these conditions and, though you must involve your doctor if you have or might have a serious illness, herbs will be a healthier alternative to drugs in most situations.
